You Can Learn Anything From Children's Stories

So as I am sitting here on my last of school for teachers I have been contemplating several things.  First, I was thinking about the people I know who need that instant gratification.  Since I am reflecting on this school year and thinking about the next school year, I am also thinking about children's stories.  I am also thinking about a book that came out that was called All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten.  So I am going to tie all of this together.

You Can Learn Anything From Children's Stories
Children's stories are highly effective for all ages.  There are lessons learned within a short amount of time.  Today I am going to focus on "The Three Little Pigs" and it will help to explain why those who need instant gratification should be cautious.

The Summary & Analysis
Three pigs have to build their own homes.  They have grown up and they can no longer live at home.  They must begin a new life of their own. Does this sound familiar? There comes a point in our lives where we must leave the homes of our relatives and create a home of our own.  For some this may be while they are a teenager, it could be before or after college, it could be once your married.  At the end of the day, it happens to all of us.

The first pig stops to build his house out of straw.  The second pig builds his house out of sticks.  While the third pig, he builds his house out of bricks.  Let's consider this: In life, we are all given choices.  Some of us make better choices than others.  In the story of the Three Pigs, it is commonly depicting the first pig as a pig who just wants to get it over with.  This pig just wants to play and he wants to play now.  So instead of carefully thinking out what to do he quickly constructs his home with no thought.  "Hey, I've got walls and a roof, why not?" The second little pig also is depicted as a pig who wants to get it over with.  He wants to play but he's a tad bit more patient.  He finds something stronger but does not fully think about his choice.  "Well, it's better than straw."  The third pig is always described as being wise.  Sometimes he has glasses (how good would a children's story be if it did not have a stereotype?) This pig he takes him time, constructing his house out of bricks.  Now we all know someone who fits into one of these categories. You have the friend who is impulsive does what they want when they want just because they need that instant gratification.  Then we have those who have the ability to be patient and wait things out even is the process is long and arduous.

Next in the story, the big bad wolf comes.  First, he blows down the straw house and either eats the pig that lives there or that pig decides to flee from the wolf to join the second pig in the stick house.  At the stick house, the wolf comes at then blows the house down.  Once again, he either eats the pig or both of the pigs flee from the wolf to join the third pig in the house of bricks.  Now at the brick house, the wolf does what he can to blow the house down but it is too strong.  He then tries to enter the house from the chimney where he is either eaten or is burned.  Other versions depict the wolf trying to convince the third pig to meet him in various locations so that he may eat this pig.  The Wolf is representative of all things that could happen to us in our lives.  When we move into our own home we can be sure that something will happen.  This could be a flood. illness, fire, losing your job, divorce, and the most obvious, death.  The first two pigs were not prepared, they failed to plan.  For those two pigs, playing was the most important thing.  Now I'm not saying that you cannot have fun.  My point is that you have to take care of your obligations first.  Make plans that will help you to build your future because then you will be prepared for the situation and you will still be able to enjoy yourself.

Closing
We are only given one life and we must live our lives to the fullest.  First, we have to make sure that we are building our future while living in the present.  Good things are not just given to us they are rewarded to those who wait.  Make sure that in your life you have insurance so that you may be assured in your times of need.
